OC Sheriff Can Release Inmates 60 Days Early For Quarantine Relief

OC Sheriff Can Release Inmates 60 Days Early For Quarantine Relief

At today’s County of Orange press conference for covid-19 Sheriff Don Barnes says he has filed an order with the court to allow inmate release up to 60-days early.

The order filed early last week was originally turned down because Orange County jails are not at full capacity. An amended order allows Orange County jails to early release inmates with 60-days or less on their sentences.

Sheriff Don Barnes said, “Other counties have been releasing inmates early as part of their strategy, it is part of our strategy as well. A scaled-up strategy, we have protocols in place if the need comes up to release but its not our first option.”

Sheriff Don Barnes said there are currently 1400 vacancies in the county’s jails and estimates they could safely isolate about 100 people.
